Radon is a carcinogenic gas, that is naturally occurring, odorless, and tasteless. Radon is hazardous to inhale, and build-up of radon in homes is a major health concern. Many lung cancer cases are attributed to radon exposure each year. According to the EPA, about 21,000 Americans die of radon-related lung cancer each year. The Surgeon General of the United States has issued a Health Advisory warning Americans about the health risk from exposure to radon in indoor air. Dr. Carmona, the Nation's Chief Physician urged Americans to test their homes to find out how much radon they might be breathing. He also stressed the need to remedy the problem as soon as possible.
Since radon gas is common in Wisconsin, and it has no smell, or taste, most people are unaware if their house contains radon. Breathing air containing radon increases your risk of getting lung cancer, and according to the Surgeon General of the United States, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer. The best and most recognizable way to detect radon is through a radon home inspection test.
Testing is the only way to find out your home's radon levels. EPA and the Surgeon General recommend testing all homes below the third floor for radon. If you find that you have high radon levels, there are ways to fix or mitigate a radon problem. Even very high levels can be reduced to acceptable levels. Radon can also enter your home through the well water.
Triple B Home Inspection is a licensed radon home inspector, and we use top notch equipment to test your home for radon. We will show you the test results once the radon inspection is completed so you can either have the radon properly removed or know that your home is free from radon.
Radon is not just in older homes, new homes can also have radon gas issues. Radon comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water, and gets into the air you breath. Radon gases typically move up through the ground into your home through cracks and other holes in the foundation. Currently, nearly 1 out of every 15 homes in the United States is estimated to have an elevated radon level.
The radon test consists of leaving 2-4 collection canisters or leaving a measurement device in the basement or lowest level of the house for a minimum of 48 hours. The measuring devices are small, less than the size of a toaster, and are not hazardous or dangerous. The occupants are asked to leave all doors and windows to that level closed and to try to limit movement in the area as much as possible. If there is an active Radon-reduction system present, make sure the vent fan is operating properly. After the required amount of time, the canisters will be picked up, sealed, sent to a lab for evaluation, and results posted within 48 hours of the lab’s receipt. With the measurement device, the results are immediately available on the device.
